Challenge

To create engaging and original pop culture relevant designs on a daily basis and within a 24-72 hour window for use as apparel graphics & posters.

Goal

To create pop culture based designs that were relevant at time of release but had lasting power to outlive their timeline of release. All designs had to be created within 72 hours of certain pop culture media reveals.

Solution

In order to achieve this challenge, I had to keep my ear to the ground with what was relevant pop culture at that moment. I also had to keep up-to-date with current design trends at that time and what pop culture references were being used and bought. The second part of my approach was to sketch out every design prior, to work out any layout issues on paper, quickly, then move into designing digitally. I learned quickly through Pop Threads that many apparel graphics that had a hand-drawn look and art style would sell well.

With Poster Foundry, most posters were designed with a shelf-life in mind. This means that most designs were created not necessarily for the moment, but that they would be desired at any point whether the present or upon a future visit. I also established that having hidden imagery throughout designs was a way to pull in viewers to notice more details and to view the overall design as well.
